Gathering Austin, Inc., is a 501 (c) (3) Charitable Organization located in Washington, D.C. and was founded by JoVonte Austin in 2019.

JaVonte became a foster child at the age of 6 and it was in that experience that he has drawn the desire to launch Gathering Austin, a charity to support foster and parent-less children around the Washington D.C. area.

Washington D.C. was the birthplace of JaVonte in the late 80's. During that time, the city was plagued with drugs and violence which caused social and economic ills to its community and many of its community members. JaVonte's family was not void of those ills as he was born with a condition called neonatal abstinence syndrome (NAS), more commonly defined as being born with drugs in his system. JaVonte was not alone, as this condition was widely spread during that period with many of the city's children born to mothers who used drugs. Many of those children were abandoned by those same mothers who were sick with the disease of addiction. JaVonte was one of those abandoned babies. He was born 4 months prematurely and spent his first 3 months of life in the hospital, abandoned and alone. Unfortunately, him being born prematurely and with drugs in his system wasn't the only challenges that baby JaVonte faced. In addition, JaVonte was born with an abnormal brain development. This condition is defined as Cerebral Palsy. Towards the later part of JaVonte's 3 month hospital stay, the hospital executives eventually tracked down and contacted JaVonte's next of kin, his maternal grandmother and made her aware of baby JaVonte's circumstances. His grandmother did just as many of the city's grandmothers had done; she took baby JaVonte home and raised him alongside of her 7 other grandchildren. Unfortunately, JaVonte's grandmother suffered a stroke and was unable to continue to provide care for the children. Young 6 year old JaVonte, along with his other siblings, were split up and placed in foster care until he aged out of the foster care system.

Navigating through the foster care system, losing close and regular contact with his immediate family circle and losing a sense of community is what has inspired JaVonte to launch Gathering Austin's, Inc.
